In February 2024, we had a nice view of the southern winter Milky Way from Cedar Key, Florida. Despite being under a bright, waxing gibbous Moon, the camera recorded a good representation of what we might see visually in a dark sky of this part of the sky. The heart of the former constellation Argo Navis is the area where Puppis, Vela, and Carina border; Cedar Key is not quite far enough south to see the entire False Cross asterism, comprising two stars from Vela and two from Carina. This image depicts my recollection of the constellation outlines as represented by George Lovi, the longtime columnist and cartographer for Sky & Telescope magazine. Boundaries instead of outlines. |
