May 30

On Memorial Day Monday, I was able to get out a little earlier and catch the various planet scenes in a darker sky.  We have a detailed view of Venus' position, the main overview, then detailed positions of Jupiter/Mars and Saturn.

May 29

The Mars-Jupiter conjunction is the last close pairing of planets in the morning sky this year except for possible action later between Mercury and Venus, so I was glad to see clear skies for this event.  Jupiter and Mars are in the little rectangular section of Pisces that protrudes down into Cetus, and Venus is near the Pisces-Aries border, which it will cross on May 31.

May 17

A day and a half after the lunar eclipse, we finally have clear skies for a view of the morning planets.  Mars is approaching Jupiter, drawing ever closer toward their conjunction on the 29th, while Venus is moving farther away, every day closer to the horizon and down to the left.

May 11

Another beautiful morning in central Virginia!  This morning the distances between Venus, Jupiter, and Mars have equalized even more and a standard 50mm lens can no longer capture all four planets in the same scene.  The magnitude of Venus is -4.05, Jupiter -2.19, Mars +0.81, and Saturn also at +0.81.  This is Venus' last full day in Cetus; tomorrow morning she will straddle the border between Cetus and Pisces LOL.

May 9

After many days of clouds and rain, the morning of Monday, May 9 dawned clear so we could get another view of the planet parade.  Now, Venus has moved well beyond Jupiter, but on the other side, Mars is approaching Jupiter, so the distance between those planets is almost equal.  Saturn is far off to the upper right, still in Capricornus.  Note that all the planets are now well below the ecliptic.
