NGC 2396 is an open cluster right at the tri-border region between Canis Major and Puppis, just south of Monoceros.  It is barely across the border from Canis Major, in Puppis probably by only a few arc-minutes.  I found this object to be surprisingly difficult to locate via star-hopping, mainly because the star field in this area of the Milky Way is peppered with evenly bright stars with no real discernible pattern.  My route was to start at NGC 2374 (which I had to relocate because I was down at NGC 2367), then go northeastward past two rows of star aligned perpendicularly to the route I was taking, and then arriving at another group of stars within which the cluster was situated.
Once I arrived there, I thought it was easy to see, fully resolved, with the brighter stars of the cluster making a semi- circle.
