NGC 1172 was really hard, it took multiple attempts back and forth with the charts
to nail down exactly where it was supposed to be and switching to higher magnification
to attempt to see it via averted vision. Without the aid of the image on the
finder chart I have, I would not have been able to locate it. The star pattern
I observed in the telescope was unambiguously matched to the chart, however, so I am
100% certain I was looking in the right spot.
At this point, my race against time resulted in looking for these objects very close to the horizon in the southwest, so all of the galaxies in eastern Eridanus, including this one, were very poorly placed in the sky. I should have put these objects off to another evening when they were higher in the sky. TheSky® cites a figure of 12.0 for its magnitude, however I agree more with the Herschel 400ii list that I have, which cited it as 12.7. |
