The area of northeastern Canis Major is rich in open clusters, so in this view, we see Sirius at upper right, and the clusters northeast of it as well as the clusters in southern Monoceros. For observers of nebulae, the chart also locates two great winter objects, namely the Seagull Nebula, IC 2177, as well as NGC 2359, the planetary known as Thor's Helmet. They don't register on the image but their relationship to the surrounding clusters is still clear. I spent time hunting down a possible comet that appears on the image, exactly the green color of many comets, between the clusters NGC 2374 and NGC 2396, but despite its appearance I think it is just a hot pixel LOL. From the image, NGC 2360 and NGC 2353 seem like great targets. Unannotated image. |
