On a nice mid-summer evening from King George County in central Virginia, almost at the very end of evening twilight, I caught a nice view of the southern summer Milky Way low over the trees at a location just north of the Rappahannock River.  Amazing what a modern digital camera can show with just a 4-second exposure!  Notice that NGC 6231, one of the best open clusters in the sky, has just barely cleared the trees at bottom.  Unannotated image.
