I acquired my first DSLR, a Nikon D40, in 2009 and began attempting constellation photography in 2010 with it.  This picture was taken on one of my first outings with the camera under a fairly dark sky.  This view is focused on the brightest portion of the Milky Way that is visible high in the sky to northern hemisphere observers: the Scutum Star Cloud.  The cloud is on the left side of the frame. Note the numerous dark nebulae either dotting the star clouds with dark areas or arrayed in streamers that seem to flow away from the bright clouds.  Unannotated image, Back
