From somewhere in the mountains of Colorado, I photographed the constellation Boötes and its surroundings. Arcturus is the brightest star not only in this constellation, but in the entire northern hemisphere. Despite its size, Boötes contains no Messier objects, however we do see the globular clusters M3 and M53 just across the boundaries with neigh-boring constellations. One interesting object we did manage to catch in Boötes is the variable star RX Boötis, which is very red but not actually a carbon star. The best reason to go out and look at the Herdsman, however, is Arcturus ~ one of the prettiest stars in the sky! Unannotated image, Back |
