This picture of the southern winter Milky Way, from Canis Major to Vela, was taken in early April 1993 from the mountains of Colorado. At this time of year, the portion of the sky shown would have been setting shortly after the end of astronomical twilight, hence we see the constellations kipped over to the right, with the western horizon at the lower right corner.
