Jupiter spent 1996 in Sagittarius, reprising its performance of twelve years prior, in 1984, and which it would nearly duplicate in 2008 and 2020. This photo was probably taken from the mountains, on the date of November 9th. The horizon is the blurry dark area in the lower right corner. Jupiter was magnitude -2.08 this evening. Note how the slide film does a good job of recording the deep red color of emission nebulae. We also serendipitously caught Neptune (magnitude +7.95) at the left edge of the picture; see how the film faithfully recorded Neptune's blue color. Unannotated image. |
