Saturn and Neptune remain in fairly close proximity in the area of central Pisces. On this morning, Saturn is almost exactly on the border between Pisces and Cetus, while Neptune is situated in the small area of Pisces that extends down into Cetus and Aquarius. Saturn is at magnitude +0.37 while Neptune is +7.81, the two being separated by 9°54'06" this morning. Neptune is located extremely close to a magnitude 8.6 star (SAO 128649), the dis-tance between them being only 3'53". Unannotated image, September 26, 2026 positions. |
The asteroids 2 Pallas and 4 Vesta will be coming to opposition in early October in the same area of sky occupied by Saturn and Neptune. Vesta can be seen easily because it is brighter than magnitude +7, whereas Pallas is about magnitude +8.7 and as a result it barely shows up on the image. Pallas is the almost imperceptible dot to the lower right of a brighter star. The result is that we will have three solar system bodies coming to opposition in Cetus during autumn in the first two weeks of October. Pallas will be slightly dimmer than Neptune on the date of oppo- sition while Vesta will be significantly brighter. |
