After a week of clouds and rain, we finally got another look at the planet situation in the western evening sky. Venus has significantly closed the gap on Jupiter since May 19 and we can easily get both in the same field of view of a standard focal length lens. Venus is magnitude -3.98 and Jupiter -1.93 on this date, with 11°39'45" separating them. Compare this scene to that of May 22, 2002. Mars was part of that planetary grouping in 2002, but now Mercury takes its place (although it was too low to be included in this image). Unannotated image. |
