Jupiter is nearing its opposition point in central Gemini, now only four days away on January 10. Seen here in early evening, rising in the east, Jupiter is to the right of the heavenly twins, Castor and Pollux. He is near his brightest for the year, shining at magnitude -2.68 with an equatorial diameter of 46.5 arcseconds. This evening, Jupiter is positioned just to the north (upper left) of a tight curve of stars anchored on 63 Geminorum. Unannotated image, view shifted lower to include Cancer. |
