The largest asteroid, Ceres, is retrograding in northwestern Cetus because its opposition will occur tomorrow, October 2. Because of Ceres' size, its shape has been pulled into a spheroid and as such the IAU classified it as a "dwarf planet" in 2006, along with Pluto and several other TNO's (Trans Neptunian Objects). Ceres is not difficult to locate in binoculars now because it is just to the west of the distinctive star grouping around η Ceti. Unannotated image. |
