Mercury is in the midst of its best evening apprarition of 2024.  Four days from today, on the 24th, it will attain greatest elongation of 19°, however it will have dimmed somewhat by that time, so now, with an elongation of 17° but being brighter, it is actually more noticeable.  It remains above the horizon until the end of evening twilight, so this is a rare occasion when we can see the planet in an almost completely dark sky if we have a flat western horizon.
