Mercury is still very low in the west at the beginning of its evening
apparition, but will be rapidly moving past Jupiter in the next several
days. On this date, Jupiter is magnitude -2.06 and 33.2" wide,
while Mercury is magnitude -1.44 with a diameter of only 5.4", and the
two are separated by 2° 27' 49". Note how Mercury is just
barely south of the ecliptic, which it will cross before we see it
tomorrow evening.
