Mars is at opposition this evening, which generally means it is largest and brightest, although the date when Mars appears largest can vary by a week or so, based on when it is actually closest to Earth.  Mars is in eastern Pisces for this opposition season, moving south of the line of stars marking the cord of the western fish, on this evening about equidistant from Mu and Zeta Piscium.  This is an example of how Mars can exhibit a greater diameter be-fore or after its opposition date; note that on October 8, Mars' diameter was 22.53", slightly larger than tonight.  Unannotated image.
