In January 2016, Venus passed Saturn while both planets were in the part of Ophiuchus that occupies the ecliptic.  In this scene from the 18th of January,
I caught Venus (magnitude -4.01) already considerably east of Saturn (magnitude +0.56).  They are about 10½° apart on this date, and well north of the
ecliptic.
