In February 2024, we had a nice view of the southern winter Milky Way from Cedar Key, Florida. Here we see the southern star Canopus in Carina riding over 8° above the horizon along with the southern portion of Puppis, named for the "Poop Deck" of the ship Argo Navis. Notice that just to the right, or west, of Canopus is the famous star β Pictoris, one of the first stars around which exoplanets were discovered. |
