In February 2024, we had a nice view of the southern winter skies from Cedar Key, Florida. Here we see the southern star Canopus in Carina riding over 8° above the horizon along with some of the most obscure and nondescript constellations in the sky, namely Pictor, Caelum, and a portion of Horologium. At the top of this frame is Columba, which has a notable pattern of easily discernible stars, and at the bottom a portion of Dorado. Puppis dominates the upper left corner of the picture. The bright streak at lower right is the white sand beach on Atsena Otie (the Key closest to Cedar Key proper) lit up by the 9 day old Moon. |
