In 1992, I took a wide-field shot of the Big Dipper portion of Ursa Major, as deep as I could at the time, using my lens as wide open as possible, and captured several Messier objects as faint smudges in the field. The locations of all of the Messier objects in the frame are marked individually, including M40, the double star Winnecke 4, in case anyone wants to complete a Messier marathon and need a quick guide to its location.
