This picture captures the preview of the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in late May 2002; the two planets experienced conjunction four days from now, on June 3.  This event was preceded 24 years before on May 28, 1978, and will be succeeded by the next similar event on June 9, 2026.  On this date, Jupiter is magnitude -1.91 while Venus is -3.97 and they are separated by 4°8'.  Venus is substantially north of the ecliptic while Jupiter is just barely above it.

This photo was taken with a Nikon FE2 camera with a lens of about 100 mm focal length, probably not using a mount to track the sky's motion. The slide was scanned in 2024.
